Artwork inspired by the excavation of Cookham Abbey 2022
During the excavation of the Anglo Saxon monastic settlement at Holy Trinity Church, Cookham in summer 2022, I created artwork inspired by different aspects of the dig. This was a self-initiated research project. Below is a selection of my drawings and prints all made on site. The work is divided into three themes, the excavation trenches, the archaeological finds and the people who worked on the excavation or visited the site.
The ongoing academic archaeological research project is led by Professor Gabor Thomas, University of Reading. It was featured on BBC Two’s Digging For Britain, episode 1 series 10, first shown 1st January 2023.
Both during the dig and afterwards, I developed prints and three dimensional artwork based on my extensive visual research. The Friends of Cookham Abbey invited me to return in 2023 officially as Artist in Residence to continue my work and provide creative workshops. The artwork has been exhibited on site during the dig, locally and in London.
